Partial Review: Lakewood Golf Club

Yesterday I went and played Lakewood Golf Club in a scramble to support The Good Shepherd School. Although the plan was to do a normal review during the event, due to the chance of weather I decided to not bring any electronics on the golf course with me. I did however get a chance to talk with Lakewood about hosting a Golf NOLA event (see bottom).

This review was supposed to wait until next week but the course was in such good condition I had to let everyone know. The tournament was very lucky there was very little rain while we played. Even with some of the rain the last few days the golf course was dry and 90° rule. That made it a better day and our group finished just over four hours. I'd also like to add we won. For winning we got a trophy that was hand-painted by kids from The Good Shepherd School (below). In a way, I love this personal touch trophy better than any plastic trophy most scrambles give winners. You can tell the kids put a lot of work and heart into them. Although they were all the same each one was slightly different in a way that you know they were not all done by the same child.

Back to Lakewood Golf Club. It was noticeable right away the course was in good condition but it wasn't until we got to our first hole, the Par-3 11th, that I knew how good the conditions would be from that first tee box. The tee boxes were cut so could today they nearly puttable. Ok so that may be a bit of an exaggeration but I think you understand what I mean. They were cut just as tight and as good as the fairways. Every tee box was not perfect on every hole but the majority of each tee box was,

The fairways just like the tee box were near-perfect. When I say near-perfect they were cut tight leaving the ball perched up for a perfect shot in almost every spot of every fairway. There were however a few that had some crabgrass or areas where another type of grass was intruding but there were very few of those areas.

The greens however were fantastic. They were smooth, quick, and firm while also being very very receptive to shots. There was a good distinction between the green and the fringe as well. If I had to put a number to say how the greens were rolling I would say a solid 10. They weren't overly fast but the ball would roll out too far if you were not careful. There were a few shots we had under 50 yards that would check up fast but still roll out another 5-10ft. The speed and the firmness however did confirm one thing for me. I need knew wedges with better grooves.

Apologies to everyone for not having video and pictures to go with this today but when I go to Lakewood this week to finalize the price, date, and starting time of our first Golf NOLA event the plan is to do a normal review. With that said I do appreciate everyone's patience while I have been trying to set up some events and get our league going. Although I was initially looking at other golf courses to keep some costs down there have been some communication difficulties. I knew Lakewood would love to have us all out there. As much as I would love to do next Saturday, it is too short notice, the date we are looking at is June 26th with a 7-day prior deadline to enter.
